10 Upgrades

Tool Upgrade Priority Guide

Spend your Research Points wisely — each Zone unlocks new upgrades, but you can only pick one per pair. Here's the optimal path.

Tool Upgrade System

As you progress through the 5 Zones, you unlock new tool upgrades purchased with Research Points (RP). Most tools offer two upgrade choices per tier — you can only pick one. Choosing the wrong upgrade can make late-game inspections much harder.

Earning Research Points

Research Points are earned by sending survivors to the Laboratory for symptom research. Each new symptom discovered grants RP.

Discover New Symptoms

Send infected survivors to the Lab. Each unique symptom identified earns RP.

Prioritize sending suspects with unknown symptoms to the Lab rather than directly liquidating them.

Zone Progression

Reaching a new Zone unlocks the next tier of upgrades for purchase.

You don't need to spend RP immediately — save up if the current tier's upgrades aren't critical.

Zombie Cage Research

The $40,000 Zombie Cage allows advanced research on contained zombies for additional RP.

This is a late-game investment. Focus on basic Lab research first.

Recommended Upgrade Order

Follow this priority to maximize inspection efficiency. Color Indicators are always the best value — they give instant visual feedback.

Each zone presents a choice between two upgrades. The recommended pick is marked with a star.

1
Zone I
Thermopulsometer · 50 RP
Color Indicator
Sound Cues

Color Indicator shows orange/red for abnormal vitals at a glance. Sound Cues are useful but visual feedback is faster and more reliable.

2
Zone II
Scanner · 75 RP
Clear View
Wider Cone

Clear View removes blood and mud from survivors, revealing hidden symptoms. Wider Cone increases scan radius but isn't as impactful.

3
Zone III
Stethoscope · 100 RP
Color Indicator
Amplified Sensors

Color Indicator color-codes breathing sounds (green/orange/red), making the hardest tool much easier. Amplified Sensors enlarge black zones but don't simplify diagnosis.

4
Zone IV
Matioscope / Hammer · 125 RP
Matioscope Faster Layer Switching
Hammer Titanium Head

Faster Layer Switching speeds up the most time-consuming tool. Titanium Head only increases zombie damage — not useful for inspections.

5
Zone V
Stethoscope / Matioscope · 150 RP
Matioscope Autofocus
Stethoscope Smart Filter

Autofocus auto-adjusts to the current layer, drastically improving Matioscope efficiency. Smart Filter removes irrelevant lung zones — helpful but less impactful if you already have Color Indicator.

Thermopulsometer

Measures body temperature and pulse rate. Essential for detecting fever and elevated heart rate symptoms.

ZoneUpgradeCostEffectVerdict
Zone ISound Cues50 RPAdds sound cues for thermal and pulse measurementsDecent
Zone IColor Indicator50 RPAdds orange and red indicators for high and extreme valuesRecommended

Scanner

Full-body scanner that reveals external symptoms. Primary tool for initial screening of survivors.

ZoneUpgradeCostEffectVerdict
Zone IIWider Cone75 RPIncreases Scanner detection radius for broader coverageGood
Zone IIClear View75 RPAllows the Scanner to see through blood and mud on survivorsRecommended

Stethoscope

Listens to breathing patterns at lung spots. Difficult to master without upgrades due to many similar-sounding breath types.

ZoneUpgradeCostEffectVerdict
Zone IIIColor Indicator100 RPAdds color filter for normal, nonspecific, and infected breathing soundsRecommended
Zone IIIAmplified Sensors100 RPTuned sensors for enhanced audio clarity and enlarged black zonesDecent
Zone VSmart Filter150 RPRemoves irrelevant lung zones, only showing meaningful spotsGood

Matioscope

Inspects survivor eyeballs for microorganisms. The hardest tool to use — requires focusing through multiple layers.

ZoneUpgradeCostEffectVerdict
Zone IVFaster Layer Switching125 RPIncreases speed of switching between ocular layersRecommended
Zone VAutofocus150 RPMatioscope automatically focuses on the current layerRecommended

Hammer

Tests neurological reflexes by striking the forearm. Simple to use but only applicable when specific visual cues are present.

RP Spending Strategy

Make every Research Point count with these strategies.

General Strategy

  • Always pick Color Indicators when available — visual feedback is the biggest time-saver
  • Don't rush to spend RP. If neither option feels critical, save for the next Zone
  • Prioritize upgrades for tools you use most often (Scanner and Stethoscope)
  • Hammer Titanium Head is a trap — it helps combat, not inspections

Earning More RP

  • Send every unknown-symptom survivor to the Lab instead of liquidating immediately
  • Track which symptoms you've already discovered to avoid wasting Lab slots
  • Build the Zombie Cage ($40,000) for late-game RP farming
  • Don't quarantine survivors with already-known symptoms — focus on unknowns

Tool Mastery

  • Learn to use tools without upgrades first — upgrades enhance, not replace skill
  • Practice Matioscope on known-infected survivors to learn organism patterns
  • Stethoscope is hardest without Color Indicator — temporarily rely on other tools for breathing symptoms
  • Scanner + Thermopulsometer handle 80% of cases in early zones
